When you are considering adding an antique piece to your apartment decor, there are some things to keep in mind. First, be aware of the difference between antiques, vintage items, and collectibles. In a nutshell:
- Antiques are at least 100 years old;
- Vintage items at least 20 years old; and
- Collectibles may be vintage, antique, or recent products people like to collect, such as Funko Pop figures.
It is also a good idea to request the provenance (paper trail) of an antique piece in particular. A provenance may include purchase receipts, documents from auction houses, professional appraisals, and even photographs of the item.
If you are considering an antique piece for your apartment, ask yourself how much you like it. Will it fit in with your existing decor? Will it physically fit in your space? Remember that an antique’s ultimate value is what you are willing to pay for it.
